Everyone Needs Evernote

By Karolyn Castaldo on August 29, 2012

I have always been one to go into the store, buy a journal, write down my many ideas and wonderings for about three days, and then toss it in a drawer, only to be looked at again in a few years when I clean out my room for the umpteenth time. However, I am constantly plagued by fleeting thoughts that would interest me later on but are soon forgotten because I left that journal in the drawer collecting dust. One thing that I do always carry with me, though, is my iPhone.

I recently downloaded Evernote, an app that lets me take notes that can be formatted in almost any way I please with file attachments, folder categorization, tags, annotations, editing tools, comments: the works! For a writer and organization-freak like myself, it is the app of all apps. And though the idea of writing with pen and paper seems more natural, I am much more comfortable on my phone or computer, and with Evernote, I can sync these two devices and have my ideas linked between them, making it a portfolio of creativity and functionality.

I have devised a list of reasons that I think college students could use Evernote:

  • Taking notes in class on a phone, tablet or computer either by recording the teacher’s voice, typing, “writing” using a stylus, or taking pictures of the diagrams on the board and attaching them to the file.
  • Keeping track of assignments, due dates, and that one little piece of extra credit that the teacher briefly mentioned that you won’t remember other-wise.
  • Making to-do lists. Whether you need to clean your apartment, pay your bills or remember to buy milk at the grocery store, having an app that is connected to your cell will be useful when you just can’t remember what exactly you needed to buy or do.
  • Use it as a recipe book. Most of us, myself included, cannot find a solid place to keep all of those little recipe cards that our mothers hand-wrote for us. Type them into Evernote and then bring them up when you need them.
  • Share your notes, clippings and other Evernote creations with your friends. If you have a large test to study for, it’s cumbersome and time-consuming to scan your notes for your less-prepared friend. Sending your notes through Evernote is fast and easy.

Now, will I go to the “Trunk” and buy the $55 gift pack for myself of t-shirts and stickers to proclaim to the world how much I love this app? No. I won’t even spend the money for the Premium version for the time being. Will I explore all that the Evernote company has to offer in terms of free branch-off apps? Most definitely.  Evernote is an app that everyone with smartphone, tablet, and computer capabilities should look into to get themselves organized and ready for school this year.
